Talk about full service!
Apr 26
The other day, we treated our friends from Dunkin’ and from Hill Holliday to a little surprise. As a spring “thank you” we hired a professional car detailing service to be here in the studio parking lot all day. Clients, agency, and crew all went home at the end of the day with a nice shiny car, inside and out. Yay!

My thanks to Mike and Eric from Amazing Auto Detailing who did a great job!
New look for the blog
Feb 13
Hello again! Here’s a short interruption to our series about food photography and food styling to mention the new format we’re sporting. My web designer Natalie Diffloth and I decided this blog should look more like the rest of my website, instead of something separate out there on the internet. In the process of bringing the blog together with the rest of my site, we built the whole structure on WordPress, the blog publication app that was already running my blog. Everything should still look the same on the main site, but with the new machinery under the hood we are much more search-friendly! Also, it’s a lot easier for me to edit content. All good stuff. By the way, Natalie Diffloth lives and works in Freiburg Germany, on the edge of the Black Forest, and we do most of our work using Skype. We meet in Boston about once a year, and I’m still looking forward to someday meeting in her town.
Coming up in our series on food photography tips — we’ll talk about kitchen equipment, and I’ll show you the insides of some food stylists’ kits. Many of the tools and materials I see them use are quite amazing! I hope you’ll stay tuned.
Dinner with QRW
Dec 22
I try to have fun with work, and one thing that’s really fun in this business is the chance to enjoy good food and wine. Last Friday night my wife Elena and I had a delightful dinner with some of the staff of the Quarterly Review of Wines. By the way, here’s what we shot for the current cover, their Winter ’09 issue:
Editor Randy Sheahan and publisher Richard Elia are both walking encyclopedias on the world of wines. As we enjoyed dinner at the Winchester Country Club they gave us copious anecdotes and history on the different wines we tasted. We were joined by Randy’s wife Judy, as well as Harley MacKenzie, managing director; Lily Yamamoto, art director; Joe Cabrera, designer; and Lisa Amore, senior editor. Cheers!
Print Drawing for New Website Over
Mar 12
With the new website unveiled and the winners of the print drawing selected, we wanted to take a moment to thank everyone for the encouragement and support. The number of respondants and the diversity of the selected favorites was way beyond our expectations. One of the best parts about doing what we do is having the chance to collaborate with great creatives and get their feedback. Thank you for your thoughtful comments!
We had a blast opening each entry and putting names into the super secret and tamper-proof shoebox. Originally, we were pretty geared up to pull the names, but as the deadline approached we felt a little sad—–kind of like a kid who’s opened all the presents except for one, and once that one is open, the fun and surprise will be over. So many entries in that box were not going to win, and many more than 5 were really special to us.
In the end, we decided to have a neutral party do the honors. It was very fair, and we made sure the box was thoroughly shaken. Represented below is a selection of the images that received the highest number of votes.
